October 16, 2010 - FITNESS - Walk the Finish Line With Phil - Phil Woods, 72, has been walking from International Falls, Minnesota to Key West to inspire Americans to get active. Join him at 4pm for the final mile on October 16th and stay for a celebration party at the Southernmost House in Key West from 5:30-7:30. November 2010 November 3, 2010 - MUSIC - Peter Mayer Returns to the Armory - Lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band performs two shows at the Armory - a small venue located in Old Town. Joining Peter on stage will be his brother, bassist and songwriter Jim Mayer, and percussionist R. Scott Bryan, along with several guest artists, both local to Key West, and from points beyond. Peter will be performing songs from his latest release, Goodbye Hello, a collection of Beatles songs re-imagined. There will also be a song list retrospective that reaches back over the 25 years of a career that has included national touring with the Billboard charting trio PM, a solo career with 11 CD's as the Peter Mayer Group, and 20 + years of touring as lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett.Last year's show sold out in 15 minutes. Tickets are limited to 200 and are $25 ($30 day of show) and will go on sale to the general public on September 17 at 10 pm. November 7-14, 2010 - SPORTS - 30th Annual Key West World Championship - Considered the pinnacle of offshore powerboat racing. November 13, 2010 - FISHING - 1st Annual Florida Keys Lionfish Derby Series - An effort to control the population of invasive Lionfish, a spiny Pacific fish that is now appearing on our reefs and can displace the local species. Teams of up to 4 people will collect lionfish - competing for Biggest, Smallest, and Most Number of lionfish for a total of $3000 in prizes. Lionfish may be taken by spear, hand net, slurp gun, or hook and line. No chemicals, traps, or other collecting mechanisms are allowed. Protective gloves must be worn when handling lionfish. Registration fees are $100 per team and includes a pair of puncture resistant gloves and two banquet tickets. December 11, 2010 - HOLIDAY - 20th Annual Schooner Wharf Lighted Boat Parade - Vessels of every size and shape deck their hulls and light up the night with their creativity and originality to the delight of locals and visitors alike. Santa Claus has been spotted at the helm, ditching his sleigh for a center console or sailboat with mistletoe hanging from the mast. His first mates have included gingerbread men and the Grinch. Other times, dolphins have replaced cold-weather reindeer, ushering in Santa’s sleigh packed with lighted presents. Festivities start at 6 p.m. with the Gerald Adams Steel Your Heart Band, and the parade begins at 8 p.m. Boats will come into the Key West Bight and pass in front of the judges' stand at Schooner Wharf. January 2011 March 5, 2011 - LOCAL COLOR - 48th Annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest - Watch enthusiastic contestants, from children to seniors, pucker up and demonstrate their shell-blowing talents. No cost to enter or to compete, and no experience is necessary. Conch shells are available for purchase for those who do not have their own. March 15, 2011 - RUNNING - 5th Annual Sombrero Beach Run - 10K Run & 5K Walk Run in the Florida Keys. The 15K Challenge registers you in both the 10K & 5K Run and makes you eligible for awards and prizes in the 15K Category only. Overall prize for the 15K male/female winners is $500 cash. April 2011 April 9, 2011 - RUNNING - 30th Annual 7-Mile Bridge Run - One of the most unique running races in the world. 1500 runners from around the world race across the largest bridge of the Overseas Highway. According to organizers: "If you are interested in running this race, send in a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (business size) to request an application. To make it fair, all requests for applications will be mailed out exactly at the same time early in February 2011. Do not procrastinate sending in your request. Once the applications are mailed out, we stop the requests. We accept up to the first 1500 correctly filled out applications that are returned. The run fills up within two days after mailing so be ready to get your application filled out correctly with fee enclosed and mailed back ASAP. You may want to consider sending your prepaid self-addressed USPS overnight mail to receive your application and return it the same way. The fee for 2011 has not been determined yet. The 7-Mile Bridge Run is put on by THE MARATHON RUNNERS CLUB, a small group of individuals who put this event together for local youth organizations. Send your request to: Marathon Runners Club, P.O. April 18, 2011 - FOOD - 16th Annual Taste of Key West - More than fifty Key West restaurants offer delicious tapas-sized portions along the Truman waterfront - each taste costing between $3 - $8. Always well attended, this lively event will have you bouncing from cuisine to cuisine, all the while enjoying the generous selection of fine wines available in a commerative wine glass. Car traffic is usually heavy - so come by bike or foot and breeze on past the cars lined up. Or take the Old Town Trolley, offering free transportation for the event, starting at 5:30 pm at the Pier House (1 Duval Street), with stops at the Westin, La Concha, corner of Simonton & South Street, and the Casa Marina Resort. July 2011 July 4, 2011 - INDEPENDENCE DAY - Key West Fireworks - Dazzling fireworks show is launched from the White Street pier on the south side of the island of Key West. July 21, 2011 - HEMINGWAY - 31st Annual Hemingway Days - Weeklong celebration of Ernest Hemingway, who lived in Key West during the 1930s. Events include running of the bulls, Hemingway look-a-alike contest, short-story contest directed by Hemingway's granddaughter, and billfish tournament. July 27-28, 2011 -- FISHING - Lobster Mini-Sport Season - Two-day event draws hundreds of sometimes frenzied recreational boaters in search of Florida lobster. Many rules apply, including: Bag limit: 6 per person per day for Monroe County. Possession limit - on the water: equal to the daily bag limit. Possession limit - off the water: equal to the daily bag limit on the first day, and double the daily bag limit on the second day. Possession limits are enforced on and off the water. Minimum size limit: must be larger than 3" carapace, measured in the water. A reminder that possession and use of a measuring device is required at all times, and night diving is prohibited in Monroe County (only during the sport season). Florida Salwater Fishing License plus lobster endorsement/stamp required. Please respect other boaters, stay away from shorelines, ecological reserves, no-take zones, and canals, use a dive flag, and do no harm to the sensitive coral and eco-system. Marking the official opening of lobster season, this crustacean-focused event features street fairs, live music, and arts & crafts. September 2011 September 6 - 11, 2011 - GAY/LESBIAN - Womenfest Key West - Lesbians and friends converge on Key West for a week of activities, including late night dancing, pool parties, comedy shows, sunset sails, competitive bull riding, and lots of music.
